The what and the why

From Little Things is a repository for my thoughts on raising and educating children with a global, socially-conscious mindset--- ‘woke’ children. When I say ‘woke’, I am referring to a person who is aware of and positively engaged in the world outside of their bubble, whatever shape that bubble may take. Woke children ask questions without fear, share thoughts without hesitation, seek understanding constantly, and, in time, advocate without ceasing for what they know to be good and true.

Children have wonderfully absorbent minds and a staggering capacity for complex, creative thought. All too often adults are quick to dismiss young minds as simple. Though children lack the life experience and social conditioning that shape adult views, they are not empty vessels waiting to be filled.  Their superpower is an inborn sense of wonder that allows them to find joy in the mundane and question the ordinary. Our role as parents, teachers and carers is to cultivate that  wonder and answer those questions, as best we can.

On this blog I offer personal stories from the parenting and teaching trenches as well as reviews and recommendations of books/music/toys/apps/films/YouTube videos that I have shared with children and found useful. Each post will also include a takeaway—a snippet of information or advice to store in the back of your mind, to use as needed.

The Takeaway:

Never lose your sense of wonder.
